MADURAI: “Until I die, I will keep Tamils awake and aware with my speech,” thundered Tha. Pandian just 10 days ago at a State conference of the Communist Party of India in Madurai. Pandian passed away on Friday following a brief bout of illness. He was 88. He is set to be buried in his ancestral village of Kezh Vellamalaipatti near Usilampatti, where he wandered around in his early years spreading Communist philosophy. The veteran Communist is survived by two daughters and son, P Jawahar.

CHENNAI: Veteran communist leader and two-time Lok Sabha MP D Pandiyan passed away on Friday following a brief illness. The 88-year-old CPI national committee member is survived by two daughters and his son P Jawahar.
Pandiyan was born at Keezhavellaimalaipatti near Usilampatti in Madurai district in 1932. In 1948, at the age of 16, he was arrested when the Communist party was banned in the country. He completed his graduation in English at Alagappa College in Karaikudi and joined the faculty in the same department. His wife Joyce was also a teacher.
‘Ensure efficient functioning of child protection committees’

Village, block, district, town panchayat and ward-level child protection committees are functioning based on a Government Order. There is a need to pass a separate legislation for efficient functioning of these committees, said V. Ramaraj, member, Tamil Nadu Commission for Protection of Child Rights, here on Friday.
After chairing a meeting with officials from various departments regarding prevention of female infanticide, he said that the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights would work towards introducing legislation for these committees. The meeting was organised in the wake of an arrest made in connection with the murder of a seven-day-old female infant - the third girl child of a couple from K. Parapatti in Usilampatti block.

He was injured in the bomb blast at an election rally at Sriperumbudur near here in 1991 in which former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was killed and lived with shrapnel throughout his life, Mutharasan said.
