A month after thousands of farmers started protests against the new farm laws, the ruling BJP-JJP alliance in Haryana suffered a setback as it lost two of the three mayoral seats and all the three municipal committee president’s posts in the elections held on Sunday.
The BJP won in Panchkula where its mayoral candidate Kulbhushan Goyal defeated Upinder Kaur Ahluwalia of the Congress by a slender margin of 2,057 votes.
Former CM and Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s confidant Nikhil Madaan became Sonepat Mayor, defeating Lalit Batra of the BJP by 13,817 votes.
In Ambala, former Union minister Venod Sharma’s wife Shakti Rani Sharma (Haryana Jan Chetna Party) emerged victorious, defeating BJP’s Vandana Sharma by 8,084 votes. The Congress nominee finished a distant fourth.

CHANDIGARH: A year after the NDA comprising the BJP and the Jannayak Janata Party came into power in Haryana, it suffered a setback in the civic body elections, as it lost mayoral/presidential positions in five of the seven municipal bodies that went to polls, the results of which were announced on Wednesday.
Coming as it did in the backdrop of the month-long agitation by farmers, analysts sought to read in the outcome the disquiet of the tillers, who constitute a large chunk of the voters. While Nikhil Madaan of the Congress wrested the Sonipat municipal corporation mayor post, Shakti Rani Sharma of the Haryana Jan Chetna Party is the new mayor of Ambala municipal corporation.
Farmers have been agitating for the past 36 days now without redressal, he says
The Haryana Congress Legislature Party on Thursday passed a resolution in support of the agitating farmers against the Centre’s three contentious agricultural laws.
At the CLP meeting held here, a two-minute silence was also observed as a mark of respect to all those farmers who had lost their lives during the ongoing farmers’ agitation.
After the meeting, leader of the Opposition in the Haryana Assembly Bhupinder Singh Hooda told journalists that farmers have been agitating for the past 36 days now at the Delhi border and other parts of the State in bitter cold and at least 42 farmers have lost their lives and hence it is important to discuss the issue of farmers. “On December 7, we wrote to the Governor demanding a special session of the Assembly but the Governor has not accepted that demand till date,” he said.
