First graduates of USF s accelerated nursing degree program boost struggling workforce
Briona Arradondo reports
TAMPA, Fla. - There’s a fresh class of graduates joining the workforce in Florida, and dozens of them include nurses who hope to serve their communities and give a much-needed boost to a worker shortage.
Justin Lansford is among the first to ever graduate from the one-year accelerated nursing program at the University of South Florida. The front end of nursing school, it seems like this big behemoth that you’re going to have to get through, and it certainly does not come without its challenges, said Lansford.

The University of South Florida’s College of Nursing now is offering a webinar training series for new and experienced nurses to help the frontline workers stay healthy – mentally and physically – while treating patients amid the pandemic.
USF announced Monday that nurses locally and nationwide now can enroll in the four-part online program, called “Frontline Nursing During COVID-19: A New Paradigm.”
“The COVID-19 pandemic has taken its toll on our nursing workforce as evidenced by increased suicide rates, burnout and PTSD,” Dr. Usha Menon, dean of the USF Health College of Nursing and senior associate vice president of USF Health, said in a prepared statement. “As nurses, we spend so much time caring for others, but who cares for us? This program will serve as a critical resource to empower nurses regarding self-care and resilience.”
