One of France s biggest export industries is facing a devastating blow after an unusually severe frost earlier this month damaged vineyards across the country, heaping pain on winemakers already reeling from the pandemic and US tariffs.
The frost has affected 80% of vineyards in France s primary wine growing areas, according to the European Committee of Wine Companies. This is expected to cause a yield loss ranging from 25% to up to 50% in some regions, the trade body told CNN Business on Wednesday.
The destruction spread across the Rhone Valley, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, Provence and the Loire Valley, said Anne Colombo, president of the Cornas appellation, a wine-growing area in the Rhone region.

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body of the farmer unions protesting against the Centre s new agriculture laws at Delhi s borders, on Tuesday said the government should remove obstacles and open the doors for dialogue, over a month and a half since the talks between the two sides hit a roadblock. The government and the farmers have held 11 rounds of talks, the last one being on January 22, to break the deadlock and end the protests at different border points of the national capital that began in November last year. The SamyuktaKisan Morcha has always been in favour of dialogue. The government should remove various obstacles and open the way for dialogue, a statement issued by the SKM said.
NEW DELHI\BATHINDA: The Sanyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), the umbrella body of farmer unions spearheading agitation against the central farm laws, may not be appealing to voters to support any particular party while asking them to defeat BJP in the poll-bound states, but it is tactically allowing Morcha members to support and campaign for non-BJP political parties.
The flexibility, shown by the SKM, was reflected in West Bengal where left-linked All India Kisan Sabha’s (AIKS) leader and former CPM Lok Sabha MP, Hannan Mollah, attended internal meeting of the Morcha but preferred to stay away from its platform at the high-stakes Nandigram seat where TMC chief Mamata Banerjee is contesting against the BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari and CPM’s Minakshi Mukherjee.
