Sign Up Calls have been made for an experienced Perthshire councillor to resign from an appeal panel after asking a member of the public to “harass” a political opponent. However Liberal Democrats are standing by councillor Lewis Simpson after accidentally including city centre councillor Eric Drysdale in an email urging a Perth and Kinross resident to “harass” his SNP opposite number over a planning matter. Mr Simpson will this morning chair the Local Review Body (LRB), a planning appeal panel, for the first time in his second spell, having been in charge of the panel from June 2018 for 15 months.

Perthshire councillor apologises after telling campaigner to harass SNP colleague

Mr Simpson issued a written apology to Mr Drysdale, and was warned about his conduct. Mr Drysdale said he accepted Mr Simpson’s apology, told him “no hard feelings,” and decided against taking his complaint to the Standards Commission for Scotland. © SNS Eric Drysdale. The email was sent to a Perthshire resident campaigning against the council’s flagship Cross Tay Link Road project, in the run-up to a crucial planning meeting in October. But the incident came to light after Mr Simpson was elected convener of the council’s Local Review Body on Wednesday, replacing the SNP’s Henry Anderson who died in December after contracting coronavirus.

Irvine Lidl store plan appeal refused by councillors

An appeal to build a new LIDL store in Irvine has been thown out by councillors after plans were previously refused. The appeal was heard by the council s Local Review Body [Friday, January 8] after the decision was delayed again last year. Planning officers previously refused the decision due to  the location not taking a town centre-first approach as stated in NAC s Local Development Plan, while Lidl bosses say no suitable or available sites within the catchment area can accommodate the plans. Planning officers said the discount giant had shown no will to deliver site other than proposed Stancastle one and asking that councillors refuse the appeal.
