A NEW supermarket opened at Picket Twenty today (January 21) without a grand launch or usual celebrations as Covid-related restrictions continue to cripple lives. Co-op, on Picket Twenty Way, opened its doors at 7am, to the delight of residents who have been waiting for its opening for some months. A spokesperson for Southern Co-op said they would have liked to have a big launch for the new store, but decided not to do so to comply with Covid protocols. She said: “We wanted to make it a big event. But since the protocol says only essential people are allowed inside stores, we decided to open it without celebrations. Only the staff will be present at the store and only shopping customers would be allowed inside. We will ensure that protocols are followed.”

The store said it will create 15 new job roles and will be using 100 per cent renewable energy to power its store. It has also partnered with Pilgrims Cross Primary School, which has been working hard to ensure local children have access to free lunches and continued support during the holidays. The 2,422sqft store will also have a range of essential services including local products, Amazon lockers, and an in-store bakery. It is also planning to tie up with Hermes parcel services soon.
Andover’s newest supermarket is aiming to open its doors on January 20 as the work to fit out the store nears completion. Co-op branding is being put up on the exterior of the building in Picket Twenty, while work to complete the interior is also well underway, with shelving and refrigeration units already installed. Access to phone and data services is still taking place in the building. The store also now has opening times on the Southern Co-op website, with customers able to visit between 7:00 and 23:00 every day of the week, with a dedicated shopping hour for key workers and the vulnerable between 9:30 and 10:30 Monday to Saturday.
