Ardern s $2.5b water sweetener slammed as bribe by Collins

The Government has announced a $2.5 billion sweetener for councils who now have 6-8 weeks to decide whether they want to give up their pipes and reservoirs to join the Government s massive plan to merge 67 councils water assets into four regional water entities.
Concerns are mounting that the Government will force councils into the mergers, known as Three Waters reforms, rather than letting each council pick whether it wants in or out, as had previously been the plan.
Three Waters reforms are on shaky ground, with councils and mayors as diverse as Whangarei and Auckland sounding notes of scepticism and outright hostility. Announcing the sweetener, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the Government would spend 6-8 weeks consulting councils and Local Government NZ, before deciding on the way forward.

Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the funding along with a joint statement with Local Government New Zealand at the organisation s conference in Blenheim this afternoon.
Opposition leader Judith Collins says the funding amounts to a bribe, and while National is in support of funding it would tie the funding for councils to housing provision.
The government s proposed reforms would see management for the country s 67 councils storm, drinking and waste water - the three waters - moved into the hands of four regional entities which would begin operations from 1 July 2024. Ownership would remain in councils hands.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced a whopping $2.5 billion package to ensure local councils are not only no worse off , but better off from the restructure of water assets.
Last month the Government proposed the establishment of four publicly-owned entities to take responsibility for drinking water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure to stop average household bills reaching up to $9000 by 2051.
A report by the Water Industry Commission for Scotland estimated that New Zealand will need to invest between $120 billion to $185 billion on water infrastructure over the next 30 years to meet standards and provide for future population growth.
