Privatising waste management key for local govts

Privatising waste management key for local govts Monday May 03 2021 Summary Advertisement One of the major drawbacks for local governments today is their limited technical and financial capacity to manage the growing volume of garbage generated daily.  The National Environment Management Authority (Nema) projects that an average of 1,500 tonnes of garbage is produced daily in urban centres today compared to about eight tonnes produced 20 years ago.  Section 26 (Part 3 of the Second Schedule) of the Local Governments Act bestows the function of garbage management on urban councils. Chapter 1.3 (Under Roles & Responsibilities) of the Garbage Management Guideline for a Clean, Safe Attractive Urban Environment in Uganda July 2010 enjoins urban councils to develop garbage management strategies and plans.

Maize ban should help us rethink agricultural extension services

Daily Monitor Tuesday March 16 2021 On March 5, the Kenyan Government issued a ban on the importation of maize from Uganda. The decision, according to the head of Kenyan Agriculture and Food Authority, stemmed from their findings on the safety of food imports to Kenya that revealed maize from Uganda and Tanzania contains substances that cause cancer. This decision has attracted an unprecedented response from some Ugandan legislators, who proposed a ban on agricultural imports from Kenya in retaliation. Whereas the need to protect Ugandan traders involved in maize export is understandable, our legislators should become more proactive to deal with the root cause of the problem and save us from future troubles.
