Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap…and Others Don’t, he probably didn’t realize how much he was talking about Box Elder County, Utah. In his book, he talks about Nucor Steel in Plymouth (a small rural town in Box Elder County) that is situated in the north and surrounded by agriculture. Agriculture continues to have a strong presence in the county, raising crops like corn, wheat, onions and hay along with other agriculture products like milk, beef and fruit…especially peaches. Many of these products are purchased and processed locally and some are even shipped around the world.

It was gratifying to read that Utah ranks high on the list of best states in which to live. In fact, Utah rated number one in terms of the economy. My euphoric feelings were quickly replaced by sadness and deep concern when I read that we place 46th in terms of health risks stemming from pollution.

Gov. Spencer Cox Reflects On Year Defined By COVID-19
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox reflected on the past year of the COVID-19 pandemic during a press conference Thursday. He said March 11 marks the day when COVID-19 became real for many Utahns. That’s when Jazz player Rudy Gobert tested positive for the virus, followed shortly by his teammate Donovan Mitchell. Utah wouldn’t implement a statewide mask mandate until eight months later in November. Now, that’s set to end next month. State health officials reported 646 new cases Thursday. Utah also surpassed 2,000 deaths related to COVID-19. Read the full story.

I am amazed at the hypocrisy in some of our Republican lawmakers. They say one thing and do another. In 2019, the Legislature commissioned The Utah Roadmap by the Kem Gardner Institute but has done little to implement the data-driven suggestions to improve our environmental impact. Lawmakers slashed funds for increased public transportation options. Rather than support green investments, Utah approved more money to expand the Inland Port, even though there is proof it will increase air pollution, traffic and health issues.
