Continuing the residential infill of Westchester Commons, an area homebuilder is looking to add hundreds of townhomes to the shopping center that’s transitioning to a mixed-use hub.
Lakeside-based StyleCraft Homes is seeking approval from Chesterfield County to build 210 townhomes on multiple pad sites within the nearly 800-acre commercial development at Midlothian Turnpike and Route 288.
The four-story townhomes would fill the vacant sites around the center’s Panera Bread, Bank of America, Gold’s Gym and Plaza Azteca locations. The sites total just over 13 acres.
Called Westchester Towns, the townhomes would continue the residential infill that started in recent years with The Vue at Westchester Commons, a 236-unit apartment complex overlooking 288 that was developed by George Emerson and Phil Roper. Emerson had previously collaborated with Casey Sowers on the project.
The Richmond-based missionary group is seeking a permit for two five-story buildings that would fill a surface parking lot and replace an office building.

The roughly 3.7-acre site is owned by Riverside Brick & Supply Co., a 150-year-old masonry company. Riverside President Mike Wray and Spy Rock Principal Andrew Basham both confirmed that Spy Rock has the land under contract for purchase.

As a pair of new apartment buildings take shape nearby, another multifamily complex in the Brook Road corridor near Virginia Union University is getting underway.
Demolition crews were active this week at the site of the planned Sphere Apartments, a 224-unit complex to be fitted between the Brook Road post office and adjacent Spectrum apartments.
MVP Equities, a McLean-based private equity firm, is leading the $34 million project. RJ Smith is handling the demo for KBS, which is now the project’s general contractor. Cox, Kliewer & Co., out of Virginia Beach, is designing the apartments.
SASQUATCH. I imagined a collective groan when trailers for Hulu s
Sasquatch rolled across screens on the North Coast. Another exploitative, sensationalist documentary on the Emerald Triangle to make a buck off a bunch of curious outsiders, great.
That wouldn t be unfair, given the impact of
Murder Mountain. We re a proud and insular bunch, not necessarily unfriendly to outsiders but certainly to the misconceptions that breed outside of the redwood curtain.
I didn t watch
Murder Mountain and, unlike this column s regular writer, I have largely steered clear of the true crime/documentary boom of the streaming age. I enjoyed the podcast Serial, an honest exploration of the journalistic process, a messy, ambiguous journey fraught with uncertainty. My few other forays into the contemporary genre
