The discovery of COVID-19 variants in Kenora and Dryden has the region’s top doctor a little worried.
On Sunday, the Northwestern Health Unit issued a news release that the B.1.1.7 variant of the coronavirus better known as the UK variant was discovered in a Kenora case linked to Valleyview Public School.

“At this point, the variants of concern are particularly worrying because they do increase the likelihood of transmission and they can increase the likelihood of being admitted to the intensive care unit and possibly death,” Dr. Kit Young Hoon told reporters during a virtual news conference Tuesday, adding that the health unit is treating every new case as if it was a variant.

Beaver Brae School/89.5 The Lake Kenora
A staff member at Beaver Brae Secondary School in Kenora has tested positive for COVID-19.
The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board says all contacts of the case are being called and given instructions by public health officials.
The board is also working with the health unit to make sure all potential risks are minimized.
Staff and students not contacted are considered to be at no additional risk and can continue to attend school as usual.
Three positive cases have been reported at two Dryden schools in the span of a week but officials stress there has been no school exposure at Dryden High or New Prospect.
