The world class universities tag is being used liberally across higher education institutions in India too. However, the contradictions within this WCU category are glaring.

In the last few years the label âworld class universitiesâ (WCU) has made frequent, sometimes dissonant, appearances in public, state and academic discussions, and often employed synonymously with âresearch universitiesâ or âglobal research universitiesâ (a coinage that emerged post-2005, from research conducted by the Fulbright New Century Scholars Programme).
