London | About three weeks ago, a team of engineers set off from Denmark’s Jutland Coast for a patch of the North Sea roughly 80 kilometres offshore. Their job: to scope out the site for a 30-acre island the Danish government wants to build in the windswept waters.
Given the local climate, they’re not planning a pleasure dome. The island will actually be a massive energy hub, which will aggregate the output of an initial array of 200 wind turbines and distribute 3 gigawatts of power into Denmark’s grid.
It could also serve as a base for the maintenance of the turbines and construction of yet more, as the scheme evolves to an envisaged capacity of 10 gigawatts and starts feeding the national grids of Denmark’s neighbours.
