Backbone Mt. Review set for release

CUMBERLAND The Allegany Arts Council, in partnership with the Allegany County Library System, the Frostburg State University Center for Literary Arts, and WVU-Potomac State College, is pleased to announce the publication of the 2021 edition of the Backbone Mountain Review.
A virtual launch party will be held via Zoom on Sunday, April 25, 2021, at 2 p.m. to hear directly from the contributors of this year s journal. The event is free to attend and no registration is required.
BMR is an annual literary journal showcasing the creative talents and cultural diversity of the people and places within the Appalachian Mid-Atlantic. Each edition features poetry, prose, photography and other visual art representing the people and stories of our community.

FROSTBURG - Frostburg State University’s Cultural Events Series and the FSU Student Activities program will offer “Step Afrika! Presents: Celebration,” a free streaming performance on Wednesday, April 21, at 7 p.m.
The Washington, D.C.-based dance company blends the percussive dance styles practiced by historically African-American fraternities and sororities, traditional West and Southern African dances, and an array of contemporary dance and art forms. Following the performance, the dancers will present a virtual tutorial and interactive discussion, live from the Atlas Theatre in Washington, D.C.
Step Afrika!’s celebration of African-American history explores the richness and diversity of African-American life through the eyes of one of America’s most renowned dance companies. This presentation, which was conceived and filmed in 2020, will provide viewers with unique ways of deepening their understanding of

Embassy Theatre endures through pandemic

CUMBERLAND - After closing its doors one year ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Embassy Theatre, like many arts organizations in the state of Maryland, has faced numerous challenges.
Fortunately, with the support of the Maryland State Arts Council and the Allegany Arts Council, the Embassy has prevailed and the theatre is ready to open the doors once more to audiences on March 19, with the remounted production of “See How They Run” by Phillip King, directed by Mark Ashby.
The Embassy Theatre recently received emergency grants from the Maryland State Arts Council ($10,378) and the Allegany Arts Council ($3500) along with grants from Main Street Maryland ($2861), the Community Trust Foundation ($3128), and the Hotel/Motel Tax Fund ($3500). These grants totaling close to $20,000 have helped keep the lights and heat on at the Embassy throughout the second wave of the pandemic in Allegany
