There’s a self-conscious artifice that needs to be embraced in order to fully enter the world of St. Vincent’s dark and compelling new album,
Daddy’s Home. In and of itself, this isn’t necessarily anything new: Annie Clark, the multi-hyphenated artist now six albums deep into her career under the St. Vincent moniker, has always had a chameleonic muse, adopting different personas and perspectives in her songwriting, most recently with the high-gloss, electronic-infused pop of 2017’s
Masseduction, where she sometimes sounded as though she were broadcasting from a near-future dystopia. But with this latest record, she’s gone the opposite direction, back into the past, to conjure a vision of a time she’s only known through music and stories the early ’70s in New York City. The grit of 1970s vinyl meets the grain of 1970s celluloid with “Down,” the infectious third advance offering from Daddy’s Home, the new St. Vincent album dropping May 14 by Loma Vista Recordings.
Co-directed by St. Vincent (a/k/a Annie Clark) and Bill Benz, the “Down” clip features its lead in full Candy Darling morning-after regalia, portraying a woman under the influence? careening through a narrative that meshes perfectly with the song’s urgent, anxious grooves.
“Down” follows “Pay Your Way In Pain” and “The Melting Of The Sun” both performed on St. Vincent’s recent return to Saturday Night Live as the final song to be released ahead of Daddy’s Home’s arrival. If early response to the album is any indication, it’s going to be a truly rapturous Home-coming:

Down serves as the third and final preview of Annie Clark s imminent LP, Daddy s Home , due out this Friday (May 14) via Loma Vista Recordings.

St Vincent Unveils Video For The Melting Of The Sun Thursday, 08 April 2021
St Vincent has shared a video for The Melting Of The Sun.
The track arrived earlier in April and will feature on Annie Clark s upcoming LP, Daddy s Home , due out on May 14 via Loma Vista Recordings. It marks the second single from the album, following Pay Your Way In Pain.
The clip was co-directed by St Vincent alongside Bill Benz, with Chris McD handling the retro, trippy animation, which mirrors the 70s rock aesthetic of the song.
