Along the way, we’ve gotten glimpses that there is something more to the duo. The group have sprinkled hints like easter eggs; GPS coordinates here, faux-dossiers there. However, the pair have always kept us guessing about what exactly they stand for.
The name is certainly no help. The title calls out German auteur director Wim Wenders’ 1984 Criterion Collection-bait
Loud And Quietuncovered in a rare interview, they initially considered the even more obvious namecheck “Paris Texas (1984).” Still, Pastel admitted in the same interview that his primary interest was in the film’s mysterious posters, not quite in flexing his art house pedigree.

A gift from the podcast overlords, previously reserved for our L&Q members
Our regular
Sweet 16 column has been a bit of a favourite for us for a long time, so turning it into a podcast has been a real pleasure. The first series, featuring Shirley Collins, Waxahatchee, Kelly Lee Owens and more, was initially reserved exclusively for members of
Loud And Quiet, but now we’re making it available to everyone. We think some of the stories in there are too special not to share.
To listen to the series, all you need to do is sign up here – just pop your email address in the box, and you’ll have access to every episode we’ve made so far, in your browser or via your preferred podcast app.

Issue 145 of
Loud And Quiet is out February 13th, featuring Squid on the cover, photographed at Portishead Open Air Pool.
It’ll be the band’s first in-depth interview about their debut album,
Bright Green Field, which was announced last week. It’s being released May 7 via Warp, and is a much stranger record than people are perhaps expecting. It’s brilliant too, and despite the bleakness of right now seeping into it, the band managed to find joy, unity and passion in its making.

“Obviously it’s not a record that everybody is going to listen to and enjoy. There’s some level of difficulty that’s going to turn some people off… and turn some people on even more.” Joscelin Dent-Pooley is as straight about his debut album as he’s always been about his good education and classical training in violin and piano.
Winterreise – released as Jerskin Fendrix in April – is named after an 1828 song cycle by Schubert and contains all the implied grandeur and ambition. It’s best to describe it as an experimental pop album – a dramatic, often unhinged breakup story that morphed into something bigger and weirder over the three years it took to make.
Loud And Quiet I d have to say, The Best of Loud And Quiet
The early days of
Loud And Quiet might have been blessed with the work of such literary giants as Jenny Pencil and Tony Soy, but the story doesn’t end with them. Since recruiting a team of writers who aren’t figments of Stu’s imagination, L&Q has published some work that’s
nearly as good as the definitely real Clive La Bouche’s seminal reviews of album artwork.
2020 has marked 15 years of
Loud And Quiet, and we had bunch of plans to celebrate, all of which have, of course, been put in the giant dustbin of Covid. Still, our team of writers and photographers are the only reason
