Portlaoise Action Against Bog Superdump appeal for funds to fight huge waste to biogas plant

Residents in Portlaoise have started to raise funds to help the fight a big waste to biogas plant which Bord na Móna wants to build on the outskirts of the Laois town.
The Portlaoise Action Against Bog Superdump group has opened a GoFundMe page to try to stop the State-owned company from building the plant which has been given planning permission by Laois County Council.
Apart from producing gas the plant will also be making large amounts of fertiliser for agriculture. The plant will rot thousands of tonnes of domestic and commercial waste every year to produce gas and fertiliser.

Planning permission has been granted for Bord na Móna Powergen Ltd to develop a biogas plant in Co. Laois.
Conditional approval has been given for the renewable gas facility, along with associated works, to be developed at Cúil na Móna bog, in the townland of Clonboyne and Clonkeen, Portlaoise.
The total area of the development will be 18ha. According to Bord na Móna, the facility is envisaged to treat up to 80,000t of organic material per year.
The renewable gas facility will use anaerobic digestion (AD) to convert the organic material into biogas.
Bord na Móna said that this development will have the capacity to produce “enough renewable biogas to supply up to 5,500 homes per annum”.

The technology group Wärtsilä will supply two large-scale biogas upgrading plants to different locations in Denmark.
The order was placed by Nature Energy, a biomethane company. By injecting biomethane - the end product of upgraded biogas - into the gas grid, Denmark will be taking an important step towards its stated ambition of becoming a climate neutral and fossil-free nation. The agreement with Wärtsilä dates back to early 2019, but the project was delayed because of permit applications. Production of the upgrading unit was initiated in 4Q2020, and the orders were also included in Wärtsilä’s order book.
