Sydney, Perth, Brisbane and Darwin are all battling to contain the spread of the highly contagious Delta strain. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced a three-day snap lockdown for parts of the state after an outbreak grew by another two community cases on Monday. The lockdown will commence at 6pm on Tuesday night (local time) and is scheduled to finish 72 hours later, at 6pm on Friday. Restrictions will be in place for South East Queensland, Townsville, Palm Island and Magnetic Island.

She said it was likely household contacts of the new cases would continue to test positive and urged all residents to remain vigilant.  Seventeen of the new cases have been linked to previously reported cases, Ms Berejiklian said, including three new ones linked to the Great Ocean Foods seafood wholesaler in Marrickville - taking the total number of infections linked to the venue to 19 - and a further three cases connected to the West Hoxton birthday party.

The only reasons to leave during this period will be to attend essential education or work that cannot be done at home; to obtain health care services, including vaccines; provide care or support for a vulnerable family member; do essential shopping; or exercise.

“What I want to see in progressive days is that we start seeing all of the cases being effectively isolated that we’re announcing. That will be a key indicator of success. “At the moment we are still seeing some cases that were potentially infectious in the community but what we’re hoping is, because of the lockdown, the number of interactions those cases have had, where there is the potential for transmitting the virus, would have decreased significantly.” It came as another school was caught up in the outbreak, with a student at a Rose Bay high school testing positive. Chant said the school was closed for cleaning, and that all staff and students had been asked to self-isolate until they received further advice.
