After discussing how to help the minds of our children and young people over the next few weeks and months, Susan Keogh turns to physical health. There’s been a lot of discussion about sports participation and keeping kids active on Off The Ball this week and to talk further about this, she was joined by Dr Sarahjane Belton, Lecturer in Physical Education at the School of Health and Human Performance at DCU.
She also spoke to Rose Anne Kenny, Professor of Medical Gerontology at St. James s Hospital and Director of the new Mercer’s Institute for Successful Ageing, about how our older population are also feeling the impact of a long-lockdown, and what to do to help them.

Researchers at the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) have released a detailed and wide-ranging report revealing the toll of the COVID-19 crisis on the health and social circumstances of Ireland’s older adults. The report was launched by Frank Feighan, TD, Minister of State for Public Health, Well Being and the National Drugs Strategy.
The TILDA COVID-19 report delves into a broad range of factors that affect the lives of adults aged 60 years and over during the first few months of the pandemic, including changes to everyday activities, social interactions, physical activity, and other behaviours, as a consequence of measures put in place to curb the spread of the virus.
