The U.S. is continuing to pressure all Libya related stakeholders to ensure the holding of the 24 December elections and the departure of ‘‘all’’ foreign forces from the country.
The latest statement on the matter came yesterday through the U.S. Embassy, Tripoli:
‘‘During a meeting with Paul Soler, France’s Special Envoy to Libya, Ambassador Richard Norland and CdA Brian Aggeler reaffirmed U.S. support for the upcoming national elections in Libya and the departure of all foreign military forces and fighters.’’
The stress on ‘‘all’’ foreign military forces and fighters comes on the back of the spat between Libya’s Foreign Minister Najla Mangoush and the High State Council (HSC).

The House of Representatives (HoR) committee set up to propose names to head Libya’s sovereign authorities has drawn up a lengthy list of names for the 10 positions and presented them to HoR president Ageela Saleh on 25 April.
The names were then sent by the HoR to the High State Council (HSC) on 26 April. For its part, the HSC met in Tripoli on 25 April and set up its own committee to assess the names.

The U.S. Embassy for Libya announced today that its Ambassador Richard Norland spoke with HoR head Ageela Saleh from London on Friday (23 April) to discuss progress on elections and on the 2021 budget.
The Embassy statement said Ambassador Norland welcomed the Saleh’s ‘‘firm commitment to holding national elections on December 24 and his assessment of progress toward a constitutional and legal basis to facilitate the elections. The Speaker also provided an update on negotiations to finalize a budget that can address the nation’s most immediate and pressing needs’’.

It will be recalled that Libya’s parliament, headed by Saleh, rejected on 20 April the draft 2021 budget presented by Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba’s government and sent it back with huge amendments.
