High Ground starring Jacob Junior Nayinggul and Simon Baker is out May 14 on streaming and video on demand. The film focuses on a massacre that occurred to the Aboriginal Australians and the violence that it brought afterward. Baker plays an ex-sniper named Travis, who returns to the area years later to track down a wanted criminal with help from Gutjuk (played by Nayinggul). However, Travis’ past and his role in the tragedy are revealed.

This outback western, set in Australiaâs Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, begins in 1919, depicting a brutal massacre of a group of Indigenous people known as Yolngu. Above the killing fray is a rifleman named Travis (Simon Baker), a member of the party of white people encroaching on the land. The group below has gone against the mission â Travis was supposed to be the only member of the party authorized to shoot â so he descends from his defensive position and tries to save the Yolngu. One surviving Indigenous witness is a young boy named Gutjuk (Jacob Junior Nayinggul).

The rise in conflict between drastically different cultures is often driven by the missed opportunity between the groups to want to better understand the other’s distinct ways of life. The upcoming action-adventure movie, ‘High Ground,’ challenges the accepted notions of Australia’s settlement, and presents an alternative perspective on how the country was formed by its different cultures. It also explores the themes of identity in both the native Black and foreign white cultures, and the attempts that were made to preserve and progress both groups’ way of life in the face of an overwhelming threat.
