With the number of COVID-19 cases on the rise daily, there is a shortage of beds in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) for the COVID-19 patients in hospitals islandwide.
Primary Health Care, Epidemics and COVID-19 Disease Control Minister Sudarshani Fernandopulle told Daily Mirror that the available capacity in ICU was almost full.
Steps are being taken to increase the capacity in ICUs and High Dependency Units in order to address the issue,” she said.
She also said a new strain had been apparently identified and that’s why the ICU admissions had gone up.

Some 511 people in Kenya have tested positive for Covid-19 from a sample size of 4,020 tested in the last 24 hours.
The country’s positivity rate is now at 12.7 per cent.
From the positive cases, 477 are Kenyans while 34 are foreigners, with 280 males and 231 females.
The youngest positive case is a five-day-old infant while the oldest is a 95-year-old individual. Covid 19 Time Series
This pushes the total positive cases recorded to 157,492, with the cumulative tests conducted so far at 1,651,008.

The country’s positivity rate is now at 10.9 per cent. From the positive cases, 184 are Kenyans while 10 are foreigners.
The youngest positive case is a nine-year-old child while the oldest is a 90-year-old individual.

County distribution; Nairobi recorded 115 cases, Kiambu 12, Uasin Gishu 11, Kajiado 9, Embu 8, Kitui 8, Kericho 7, Machakos 6, Trans Nzoia 3, Nakuru 3, Nandi 2, Homa Bay 2, Kilifi 2, Kisii 1, Muranga 1, Narok 1, West Pokot 1, Kakamega 1 and Bomet 1.

Number of ICU beds in government quota hits ‘zero’ on BBMP portal during court hearing
In an unprecedented and ‘scary’ moment, the number of beds available for COVID-19 patients in Intensive Care Units (ICU) in city hospitals under government quota touched ‘zero’ around 5 p.m. on Friday when the High Court of Karnataka was inquiring about availability of beds, oxygen and other facilities.
Around 4.50 p.m., the counsel for the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) was informing the court about the number of beds available under government quota in the categories of High Dependency Units (HDU), ICU and ICU with ventilator.
