Recently a short video made by Dananeer Mobeen, a young Pakistani woman, went viral. It was a casual video in which the woman lightheartedly parodied the ‘Americanised’ Urdu accents of certain upper-class Pakistanis.
Indeed, viral videos and memes are nothing out of the ordinary. Their ‘fame’ usually lasts a few days. Like most popular culture products, they are quickly consumed and then disposed. But like any other popular culture product, they too can add something substantial to an ongoing social or political discourse.
Popular culture products have rapidly evolved, but their nature has remained the same. They have managed to not only exercise social influence but also impact various political aspects of a society. It is thus not uncommon for governments to ban or try to control certain products of popular culture.

The Kano State Police Command has arrested no fewer than 23 suspected mobile phone snatchers who specialise in terrorising residents of Sharada, Sauna and Sabon Gari Quarters of Kano Metropolis.
This was just as the command said the police detectives have also arrested 19-year-old Umar Isa of Kankia local government area, Katsina State for defrauding Auwalu Abdulmalik and Buhari Yusuf the sum of N353,000.
He said the suspect has also threatened to kidnap daughters of his victims if they fail to send him more money.
According to a statement signed by the command spokesperson, DSP Abdullahi Haruna, a copy of which was made available to pressmen in Kano on Tuesday said the operation followed series of complaints lodged by residents of the affected areas.

The police in Kano said they have smashed a syndicate of mobile phone thieves who allegedly operate in Sharada, Sauna and Sabon Gari quarters of Kano Metropolis.
Kano has a high rate of mobile phone snatching with some of the cases leading to the death of victims who attempted to resist the thieves.
The police spokesperson in the state, Abdullahi Haruna, in a statement on Tuesday said officers arrested suspects in an operation that followed complaints by residents of increasing incidence of phone snatching in the named areas.
