The number of U.S. lives lost to opioid overdose has been increasing for nearly two decades in an epidemic that affects people of all ages, races and geographic areas to include Marshall.
In seeing an increase in opioid overdoses in Marshall, the Marshall Police Department has had all officers attend training through the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Overdose Education and Naloxone Administration Training for First Responders.
Opioids kill by depressing respiration to the point that insufficient oxygen is available to brain and other cells, a condition termed as hypoxia. Naloxone displaces opioids from the brain receptors to which they attach, reversing their effects and restoring normal respiration. The public health challenge is ensuring that naloxone is available when and where it is needed.

The W.I.C. Saline County Health Department is temporarily increasing the Cash Value Benefit (CVB) for fruit and vegetable purchases.
The health department says the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) gave USDA authority to temporarily increase the CVB to $35 per month for eligible women and children during the federally-declared COVID-19 public health emergency. Missouri W.I.C. has elected to use this authority from June through September 2021 to provide additional healthy fruits and vegetables for up to 60,000 women and children per month. Standard CVB values range from $9 to $11.
W.I.C. families have the opportunity to shop for nutritious foods at over 600 authorized W.I.C. retailers throughout Missouri, and can receive services at any of the 118 local agencies. They announced on their Facebook page that they prefer to not vaccinate women between the ages of 18 and 50 with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine due to the prior issues with this particular vaccine.Â
