By William Gray | The Public Forum   | Dec. 24, 2020, 1:00 p.m. Utah values continue to be illustrated in response to the current pandemic. Not the values that Gov. Gary Herbert fantasizes about, but the actual values as demonstrated. The Salt Lake Tribune recently highlighted two examples. First, a group of parents filed a lawsuit against the Salt Lake City School District to ask a court to order in-person schooling. I haven’t seen the lawsuit, but from the context it appears the demand is made for all schools and all grades.

Letter: Salt Lake City teachers deserve a bonus (Trent Nelson | Tribune file photo) An empty classroom at Glendale Middle School in Salt Lake City on Friday, Dec. 4, 2020. By Ryan D. Curtis | The Public Forum   | Dec. 22, 2020, 2:11 p.m. The Utah Legislature’s decision to exclude Salt Lake City School District teachers from receiving a $1,500 COVID bonus unless the district returns to in-person instruction by the start of the 2021 legislative session (Jan. 19) is punitive and demoralizing to teachers. First, the decision to remain online was made by the school board, and teachers should not be penalized for this. Second, and most importantly, online instruction is just as taxing for teachers (if not more) as in-person instruction, and they should be rewarded for their service during an extraordinarily difficult time. Please contact your legislators and urge them to fix this.
