SALT LAKE CITY Salt Lake City School District announced on Tuesday that it will still require students to wear masks after several districts last week said they would no longer require them for the last week of school.
Some school districts decision to ditch the masks came after Gov. Spencer Cox said they would not have to require students and staff to wear masks during the final week of the 2020-2021 school year. We ve come too far to let go of proven safety practices like mask-wearing with just a few days left in the school year, Salt Lake City School District Interim Superintendent Larry Madden in announcing the decision Tuesday. While we ve been able to offer vaccinations to our educators, staff, and some of our students, very few of our students have been vaccinated thus far. The risk is too great, especially when we consider those in our school communities with pre-existing health conditions or who have family members at home who are high risk for contracting COVID-19.
SALT LAKE CITY The Utah Legislature passed a ban on face mask requirements in schools beginning with the next academic year after an emotional debate Wednesday among some who questioned how an end to mask-wearing could impact unvaccinated students, and others who pleaded for the move to improve kids mental health. It s really about the mental health of our students, bill sponsor House Majority Assistant Whip Val Peterson, R-Orem, said. I know there s been some concerns about local control, and I just want you to know that local control is maintained, Peterson said, explaining that masks can be required by schools in collaboration with local health departments during outbreaks under HB1007.
