Shortly after hiring Sean Desai to be their defensive coordinator, buzz began building around the Bears’ interest in brining Duce Staley onto Matt Nagy’s staff. Staley, currently Philadelphia’s Running Backs Coach/Assistant Head Coach with the Eagles, makes sense as a person of interest for Chicago. After all, the Bears just saw lost their own RBs Coach to the Falcons.
But here’s the caveat: Staley is still under contract in Philadelphia. Therefore, isn’t exactly available for hire. Not without a promotion of sorts. And after interviewing for the Eagles’ head-coaching position – and ultimately, being passed – Staley reportedly wants out:
No more waiting on a new head coach for the Detroit Lions. Former New Orleans Saints Assistant Head Coach and Tight Ends coach, Dan Campbell was announced as the 30th coach in the teams 90 year history. Campbell also becomes the teams 5th coach in the last 5 years. 3 coaching changing happened last season after the firing of Matt Patricia where Offensive Coordinator Darrell Bevel would take the reigns until his COVID-19 diagnosis. Wide Receivers Coach Robert Prince would fill in until Bevel could return.
Campbell will be taking his first full time head coaching job. Campbell took over in 2015 as the Interim Head Coach after Joe Philbin started the season 1-3 and was fired where he would post a 5-7 record. After the 2015 season, Campbell would return to New Orleans, 7 years after suiting up for the Saints to reunite with His former Head Coach Sean Payton and join his staff as the Assistant Head Coach and Tight Ends coach where he coached up until January 17th where he would coach
Hey now, the Chicago Bears have a new defensive coordinator! And while that’s a start, other positions throughout the staff still must be filled. Eventually, we’ll dive deep into the holes that need to be filled on Sean Desai’s side of the ball. But in the meantime, a new name has emerged as a person of interest who could coach up Chicago’s offense.
After all, turning to a three-time 1,000-yard rusher is an idea worth exploring:
Let me rephrase this: the #Bears haven t spoken to Duce Staley. I deleted the original tweet because of it. I jumped the gun a little bit. There is interest there, however. That s it for right now.
Dan Campbell is empathic about the hard times people have had in Detroit, in their lives and as fans of the Lions. “We need to bring some hope back into this place," Campbell said Thursday, a day after he signed a six-year contract with the Lions and general manger Brad Holmes was formally introduced. Despair, though, is a commonly shared emotion for followers of a franchise with 13 double-digit loss seasons since 2001 and only one playoff victory since winning the NFL title in 1957.
