The Rivers Government, on Wednesday, announced the release of N9 billion by the State Governor, Nyesom Wike, for the effective take-off of three campuses of the State University at Emohua, Ahoada and Etche local government areas of the state.
The money is part of the N16.6 billion released by the governor for the general upgrade of the University, according to the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Paulinus Nsirim.
The commissioner who disclosed the governor’s move to journalists said the release of the money was in keeping with his (governor’s) promise to the people of the state.

Under this scheme, scholarship is granted from class 9 onwards till they pursue their graduation and the amount is paid through their individual accounts in Post Offices / Banks. The Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Board has denounced any misinformation being spread that the current review of the national priority areas is aimed at restricting students’ choices, curtailing their aspirations or any attempts to reduce the budgetary allocation for the scholarship and loans schemes.
Chairman Rakesh Ram says the objective of the review is to identify the human resources needs of the industry sectors for the next 10 years in a consultative approach.
He says the review is further aimed at identifying the new fields that need to be addressed in the priority areas for funding under the scholarship and loans schemes and at the same time the review will assist TSLB in identifying skills that are becoming obsolete/redundant so that appropriate recommendations could be made for

2,755 students have so far applied for scholarships and loans with the Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Board.
The Board has confirmed that applications are still open for the National Toppers Local Scholarship, Scholarship Scheme for Students with Special Needs and Tertiary Education Loans Scheme for new students and Technical College of Fiji Students, until 24th January 2021.
Currently, 1,526 students have applied for National Toppers Local Scholarship Scheme, 976 students have applied for TELS for the first time while 142 existing TELS students have also applied.
TSLB says students who have completed Year 12 or 13 in 2020, are reminded that they must register and apply before 24th January 2021 even if they do not have their results, final program offer letter, rent or hostel agreement or evidence of residential address from where they will be travelling for classes.
"Out of this amount, 60 per cent will be from the Centre and 40 per cent from the state. Post this, every year, there will be an increase of five per cent of the Centre s share till the share reaches 80 per cent," Athawale said at a press conference.
