After Slow Start, Drexel Eyeing First NCAA Tournament Bid Since 2014

Fri Apr 16 2021 | Patrick Stevens | College PHOTO BY KEVIN P. TUCKER Already staring at a later start to the season than most, Drexel also had a two-week pause just as practice began in early February. With those sorts of issues, it probably wasn’t a surprise the Dragons started 1-2. Coach Brian Voelker acknowledges the lack of practice time played a role in the uneven start. But he also said this week the Dragons simply weren’t playing well at the time. Not anymore. Drexel (5-2, 3-2 Colonial) has won four games in a row its longest winning streak since a nine-game run late in the 2014 season propelled it to its first NCAA tournament trip and an appearance in the quarterfinals as it heads into Saturday’s trip to Fairfield and already avenged its losses to Massachusetts and Delaware.

Head Down, Hard Work Pays Off For Drexel and Senior Aidan Coll

Thursday April 15th, 2021 9:00am (Photo Courtesy Drexel Athletics/Sideline Photos) With Drexel riding high on a four-game winning streak and having avenged both their losses, coach Brian Voelker brought his team together after a slow start to practice Wednesday and asked senior attackman Aidan Coll to stand up and speak to the team.  Coll, the CAA Player of the Week after scoring five goals in Drexel’s 12-10 win at then-No. 12 Delaware on Saturday, didn’t play much his first two years before breaking through with 10 goals in six games as a junior in 2020. Voelker asked Coll to address his younger teammates about why he’s playing now as the team’s crease attackman.

Quint s Top 20: Our Time is Now

Monday April 12th, 2021 8:00am (Photo by Rachel Pincus/Notre Dame Athletics) As the NCAA winter sports seasons wrap up, lacrosse has the opportunity to step into the limelight. What’s happened is less important than what’s next. Monmouth and Bryant are the current favorites to win their league titles, but the margin of success and failure are extremely tight in 2021. LIU (4-1 NEC) and Saint Joseph’s (5-0 NEC) still have to play the Bulldogs (3-1) in the NEC. Monmouth is scheduled to play Marist on Tuesday, but that game remains in doubt due to Marist’s ongoing pause. Jacksonville is 4-0 in the SoCon but has not played High Point or Richmond yet. Stay in the hunt. Make the next game the most important one of the season. This is when the fun begins.
