Healthbarn launches $1 million food program kicks off in North Jersey

RIDGEWOOD Eleven days after receiving a $1 million grant to employ local restaurants in feeding Bergen County s hungry, the HealthBarn Foundation launched its first meal deliveries Monday. Director Stacey Antine said 10 restaurants, including the Chestnut Deli, were engaged in sending a total of 910 meals to various locations, including the Franciscan Community Development Center in Fairview. The deliveries will continue through May 31. Bergen County Commissioner Tracy Zur is coordinating the distribution of the meals through the commission s Food Security Task Force, and said the meals are being distributed on a scheduled basis to a variety of institutions.  Residents should check with their nearest food  pantry for a location and their guidelines to receive a meal, Zur said.

The Item The Baker-Polito Administration announced over $13.2 million in grants to address urgent food insecurity for residents across the Commonwealth as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This funding is being awarded as part of the final rounds of the $36 million Food Security Infrastructure Grant Program, created following recommendations from the administration’s COVID-19 Command Center’s Food Security Task Force, which promotes ongoing efforts to ensure that individuals and families throughout the Commonwealth have access to healthy, local food. Local awards include: • Bob s Turkey Farm, Lancaster, $45,000: To meet the changing needs of the ongoing pandemic, program funding will go towards the purchasing of important infrastructure at the farm, including the cold storage of turkeys. Furthermore, the farm dedicates approximately 10% of sales each week to SNAP recipients and provides several donations to local food pantries and organizations in the area.

The Luntiang Paraiso urban farm is the first urban vegetable farm in the city under the “Buhay sa Gulay” which is an initiative of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) and Department of Agriculture (DA).

Women and youth were seen championing eco-farming and gardening in a recent tourism and travel trade fair held in Quezon City. The women and youth organizers, farmers and gardeners of the International Marian Association of DAR and Urban Green Communes organized the 2021 Resilient Eco-Farm Tourism Travel and Trade Exhibit from January 29-30 at the Robinsons Nova Mall. The 2-day theme exhibit opened spaces for discoveries on how to forward together and level-up the playing field, while keeping in mind balance in land use to maximize limited resources and community-driven profits (SDG 8).
