On Monday evening (1 February) President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the relaxation of restrictions for adjusted Level 3, which included the partial lifting of the ban on the sale of alcohol. This follows more than a month of no alcohol sales across the country, which also led to various companies and associations approaching the courts in a bid to reverse government’s ban, which was implemented on 29 December 2020.

The commission is probing seven major retailers for alleged price gouging. These include Pick n Pay, Woolworths, Food Lover s Market, the Shoprite Group and Boxer amongst others. The commission said that the investigation was launched following complaints by consumers about excessive price hikes since the national lockdown.

The demand for garlic and ginger shot up ever since claims that they could help with Covid-19 symptoms surfaced even though there was no evidence that eating garlic can protect people from contracting the virus according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
