On Saturday, April 17, the Small Business Administration
(SBA) activated a new website and released a sample application form for
the Restaurant Revitalization Act grant program established under
the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (for more
on this program, see our alert from April 12). Although
applications are not yet being accepted, the limited funding
available for this tax-free grant program and its
first-come-first-served approach mean that applicants should lose
no time in completing the new form so they can submit it at the
earliest possible opportunity.

Over $ 28 billion included in the Restaurant Revitalization Act will start to go out to restaurants around the country at the end of this month, giving much needed relief to an industry hit hard by the pandemic.
But in the meantime, two Capital Region chefs are receiving some national recognition. The chef of McGeary’s Pub, Shaila Abasse and Allie Williams of Allie B’s Cozy Kitchen will both be featured on The Food Network’s Chef Bootcamp this season. The pandemic forced Abasse to lay off workers and she now operates her kitchen with limited staff. Both chefs say that the show has shown them they will be able to succeed, despite the pandemic.

Restaurant operators said they are hopeful that the American Rescue Plan signed into law by President Biden last week will help prevent any more restaurants from closing, after the COVID-19 pandemic has wiped out thousands of locations across the country.
The new program includes a $28.6 billion Restaurant Relief Fund up to $10 million per restaurant and can be used to cover a wide range of pandemic-related costs. The grants will be distributed through the Small Business Administration, and include a $5 billion carveout specifically targeting small restaurants with less than $500,000 in revenues in 2019. The grants also prioritize businesses owned and controlled by women, veterans, and others considered socially and economically disadvantaged.
