Emory Schley: Getting down to the nitty-gritty
Ocala Star-Banner
A few readers have inquired about the cardiac procedure I underwent recently, so I will attempt, as best I can, to explain. This will be with the understanding between us that I am no expert in these matters. My greatest talent usually lies in the domain of asking stupid questions, rather than giving complex explanations. But, here goes:
The human heart is composed of several compartments, and one of those is called the left atrial appendage. That, so I’ve read, is where blood clots can form in non-valvular atrial fibrillation patients and those clots can trigger strokes or heart attacks.

Emory Schley: Did Mother Nature and Jack Frost switch roles?
Ocala Star-Banner
I’m writing this on what will have been last Saturday by the time you read it. I had thought “Spring had sprung” on us here in Beautiful Marion County, but I guess Mother Nature likes to keep us guessing. She must have been snickering a bit this morning as we awoke to temperatures in the high 30s. Or could it be she just took a day or two off and had Jack Frost fill in for her?
PERSONAL NOTE: Today, I am scheduled to have a heart procedure done at Ocala Regional. It involves general anesthetic, and drilling a hole in my heart, among other tasks. Supposedly this is a relatively routine procedure to plug up the left atrial appendage, but invasive surgery always carries some degree of risk.

Jim and Roberta Cullen have taken 65 sea cruises in the past 20 years. They can t wait for COVID-19 pandemic restrictions to be lifted so they can embark on No. 66. We miss our cruises; it s sad, said Roberta Cullen, 67, as she and Jim, 71, recalled highlights of their many cruises recently during a visit at their On Top of the World home.

Roberta Cullen is a native of Honolulu. Her grandfather opened the Palama Settlement, a charitable outreach in the area, in the early 1900s.
Emory Schley: Would having a special party be OK?

I received my second COVID-19 vaccination on Saturday … and so far, so good.
I received both my vaccinations at the On Top of the World Community Center. It was reasonably quick and convenient, you don’t even have to get out of your car and you can keep the air-conditioning on during the entire process.
That’s really nice – especially for us Olde Codgers who may not do so well in the heat.
Dearly Beloved was running about two weeks or so behind me in getting her shots, but she will shortly be getting her second one at Paddock Mall.
