Mark Ruffalo: Native People Are Marginalized, Mistreated in the Colonial System of America

Left-wing activist and Avengers star Mark Ruffalo said on Friday that Native Americans are “marginalized” and “mistreated” in the “colonial system” of the United States. Ruffalo praised the passage of the America Rescue Act, marketed by Democrats and leftist news media as “coronavirus stimulus” and “COVID-19 relief” legislation in an interview with Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland. Mark Ruffalo framed Native Americans as the “most marginalized [and] mistreated” people in an America, a county he described as a “colonial system”: We’re going to talk about this part of this stimulus package that is being given to the Native American people of the United States. They are original people, our first people, and probably in some ways our most marginalized people or mistreated people of our country, and so we’re going to talk about their resilience.

New missing and murdered unit for American Indians and Alaska Natives

AC Swedbergh/AZPM The U.S. Department of the Interior announced Thursday it set up the new Missing and Murdered Unit for American Indians and Alaska Natives to support interagency investigations. Cases of missing or murdered Indigenous peoples can cover multiple jurisdictions, such as federal, state, tribal. It has become a longstanding hurdle for solving these crimes. “Violence against Indigenous peoples is a crisis that has been underfunded for decades,”Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland. Far too often, murders and missing persons cases in Indian country go unsolved and unaddressed, leaving families and communities devastated. According to a press release from the department, the National Crime Information Center reports there are about 1,500 American Indian or Alaska Native missing people in the United States, and another 2,700 murder or nonnegligent homicide offenses in the Uniformed Crime Reporting Program.

THURS: Tribes Sue US Over Clean Water Rule, Camp Pauses Plans To House Migrants, + More

New Mexico Tribes Sue US Over Federal Clean Water Rule - By Susan Montoya Bryan, Associated Press Two Indigenous communities in New Mexico are suing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over a revised federal rule that lifts protections for many streams, creeks and wetlands across the nation, saying the federal government is violating its trust responsibility to Native American tribes. The pueblos of Jemez and Laguna are the latest to raise concerns over inadequate protections for local water sources in the desert Southwest. The challenge filed last week in federal court follows a similar case brought in 2020 by the Navajo Nation, the nation s largest Native American tribe, and several environmental groups.
