Le drapeau noir des pirates serait apparu pour la première fois en 1700 au large de Santiago de Cuba, au mât d’une embarcation menée par un Français. L’objectif : faire peur et intimer aux navires attaqués de se rendre sans combat, sans quoi le drapeau rouge était hissé, signifiant « pas de quartier ».
