Katsouleas is departing next month as the president of the University of Connecticut, bringing an abrupt end to a presidency that lasted less than two years but he plans to stay on as a professor making $330,000 a year. Related Stories Katsouleas submitted a resignation letter on March 13, effective June 30. Sources say his relationship with UConn’s Board of Trustees has deteriorated but called his resignation voluntary. The conflict had several causes, sources said, beginning with an unexpected announcement at his inauguration to provide free tuition for lower-income households. More recently, he announced the university would cut slated tuition increases by half without consulting with trustees.

May 13, 2021 242 STORRS (AP) University of Connecticut President Thomas Katsouleas has submitted his resignation from the position, effective at the end of next month. Katsouleas announced the decision March 13 in a letter to Dan Toscano, the chairman of the school’s Board of Trustees, saying he was stepping down for, “reasons we have discussed at length over time.” He did not elaborate on what those reasons were. The letter, made public Thursday, indicated he planned to stay at UConn in another role. “While there is no need to list them here, I am very proud of the advancements made by the University during my tenure as its 16th president,” he wrote. “UConn has fared extraordinarily well in the face of unprecedented challenges under the leadership and decision making of our leadership team and the Board. I look forward to contributing further to the continued success of the state’s flagship institution of higher education as a member of our distinguished faculty

From the 8,000-plus students who will receive their degrees in just a few weeks, to the accomplishments of individual students like UConn’s first Rhodes Scholar, Wanjiku Gatheru, to the hundreds of thousands of patients from every town in the state served by UConn Health, to UConn’s 23 NCAA national championships. There is much to celebrate. John Malfettone and Denis Nayden Just this past year, UConn’s Paige Bueckers was the first freshman ever to win the John R. Wooden Award for college basketball’s most outstanding player. Paige’s freshman season was unparalleled, but even she couldn’t compete at that level if she had to wear ten-pound ankle weights in competition – and UConn and UConn Health shouldn’t have to either.
