National body to assess quality accreditation agencies in the offing

Trade minister Amelia Kyambadde says this will be possible once the Approved Accreditation and Conformity Assessment Bill, 2018 is assented to by the President. Addressing journalists at the Uganda Media Center on Tuesday Morning, Kyambadde said the association will monitor existing national accreditation bodies like the National Drug Authority (NDA) and the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) for Ugandan products to be competitive on the international market. Uganda has for long endured the annual accreditation cost of about $11,000 to countries like South Africa for international accreditation certificates- a cost she says will go down once the national body is in place.

Covid: temperature guns must be used on foreheads not hands

“I see most of the people putting out their hands for their body temperature to be taken. This is wrong. The forehead is the right body part from which the temperature reading should be taken, says Simon Rukundo, head of temperature laboratory, Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS).  He emphasized that users of the temperature guns should strictly follow instructions given by the manufacturers in the user’s manual regarding how the instrument should be used, stored, cleaned and disinfected. One of the solutions to misuse the guns is to frequently take it for re-calibration even beyond what the manufacturer recommends because there are many factors that affect their effectiveness.
