Ed Grimes – Photo from Campaign Facebook page
Ed Grimes will become a Montgomery City Council member, representing District 1, after his opponent dropped out of next month’s scheduled runoff.
Grimes had received 49% of the vote in last week’s special election, which was just short of the amount needed to avoid a runoff with second-place finisher Donnie Mims, who got 21%. This morning, Mims announced that he would end his campaign so that Grimes could take the seat.
“…After a lot of prayer and conversation with my family, I believe that it is best for District 1 and for Montgomery as a whole for me to withdraw from this race and to spare the district the time and expense of a runoff election. It will benefit District 1 to have a council representative immediately rather than to wait for a runoff election. I wish Mr. Grimes the best and trust that he will be a positive presence on the Montgomery City Council,” Mims said.

According to a recent Frontline Education Survey, the nation is dealing with a teacher shortage, and the Montgomery Public School System is among those trying to combat the problem.
Kim Gillis MPS Associate Superintendent of Human Resources said as the new school year approaches, it is crunch time to fill vacancies they currently have. They’re looking for interested candidates with any kind of college degree to apply for open positions.
The school system currently has over 100 vacancies. MPS officials believe this is because of an increase in retirements within the system. Also, graduation rates for those entering the education field are down across the country.

There s a short list of names tied to both Montgomery music and bringing peace to the city s streets. Roosevelt YunRo Williams is without a doubt a major player in both. Tell me how we re supposed to make it out the struggle, when everybody s killing one another. It s just the story of that street life. And I m just praying all my people get right.

Alabama News Network has noticed that some people in Montgomery aren’t yet ready to ditch their face mask even though COVID-19 cases are on the decline and restrictions are being eased.
Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said fully vaccinated people can quit wearing masks outdoors in crowds and in most indoor settings and give up social distancing.
We found some folks at Eastdale Mall who are perfectly content with wearing a mask, at least for now.
“I feel comfortable with it and more protected than a lot of people who haven’t been vaccinated. I have been, I think to protect myself and others I feel comfortable about wearing it a little while longer,” Chakee Swift told us.
