DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN Jesus has risen, and the crowds are back in church!
A year after the COVID-19 pandemic closed churches, forcing Catholics to miss Easter Sunday Mass in person, the doors swung open this Easter, and parishioners came back in droves to worship together and share in the glory of the promise of the Resurrection.
Even with the 50-percent capacity limit on attendance at churches imposed by New York State as a COVID-19 precaution, churches around the diocese in Brooklyn and Queens reported large numbers of people in the pews on April 4.
“We had a full house at all of our Easter Masses, between 3,500 and 4,000 persons in total,” said Father Manuel de Jesus Rodriguez, the pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows in Corona.

Easter Message from the Pope
He had just concluded presiding over the Easter Sunday Mass at the Altar of the Chair with a small congregation participating. The Basilica featured arrays of Avalanche roses given by Dutch florists who traditionally filled St. Peterâs Square with flowers on Easter every year, but had to stop temporarily due to the pandemic.
The Easter reality of the Resurrection offers concrete, tangible hope and consolation, the Pope noted, but its message does not offer us âa mirage or reveal a magic formulaâ we might wish as an escape exit to the worldâs difficult realities.
Vatican City, Apr 4, 2021 / 06:00 am (CNA).-
On Easter Sunday 2021, Pope Francis offered Mass at the Altar of the Chair in St. Peter’s Basilica. Afterward, he gave the Urbi et Orbi message and blessing. The following is the full text of the pope’s Easter message.
Dear Brothers and Sisters, a good, happy and peaceful Easter!
Today, throughout the world, the Church’s proclamation resounds: “Jesus, who was crucified, has risen as he said. Alleluia!”
The Easter message does not offer us a mirage or reveal a magic formula. It does not point to an escape from the difficult situation we are experiencing. The pandemic is still spreading, while the social and economic crisis remains severe, especially for the poor. Nonetheless – and this is scandalous – armed conflicts have not ended and military arsenals are being strengthened. That is today’s scandal.
