Little Desert Burn Camp 2021
After much planning, preparation and anticipation, 30 CFA volunteers from 22 brigades and six staff members from Districts 6, 15,16,17 and Headquarters completed burns at Minimay and The Little Desert Nature Lodge as part of a week-long burn camp.
The five burns successfully reduced fuel loads and protected biodiversity.
The burns were conducted in small mosaics across the grasslands and Mallee heath and interspersed among private land allotments. They offered members extensive training, mentoring and skills development. It also exposed members to fire in a controlled and safe environment.
DCO Alen Slijepcevic congratulated all the CFA members who took part in this successful burn camp.

Hong Kong has accommodated Australians since its mid-19th century urban beginnings. Whatever their ultimate ethnic origins, Australians in this part of the world are - for the most part - immediately recognisable, as soon as they open their mouths. That distinctive twangy nasal accent remains a dead giveaway. But what was the resident Australian community like in the past?
Australian women were readily recognisable - enterprising business types were, and remain, a perennial local feature. In early times, many came as performers with travelling theatre companies, got beached by unkind fate, then worked precariously on the fringes of the hospitality industry. Others ended up working in brothels to stay afloat.
KINGTON Langley Croquet Club kicked off its summer season with an inter-club derby in the absence of the usual regional competition. Normally at this time of year, the club’s two Short Croquet teams – the Apaches and the Braves – head down to Nailsea to compete in the South West district short croquet competition, but this has been cancelled this year due to Covid. However, Kington Langley’s John Grimshaw, who normally organises the Nailsea tournament, organised a home derby between the teams to ensure the competitive juices remained flowing. This was the first competition of the year for most participants, but some very close games were fought.

When Muriel Simpson married Alistair McMillan of Howth, she knew that boats and sailing would become a significant part of her life, as he had become a Junior Member of Howth Sailing Club in June 1941, while by 1967 he was so active in club affairs afloat and ashore that he was one of the energetic group in HSC – led by the legendary Howth 17 sailor Norman Wilkinson – who were working for the amalgamation of Howth SC with Howth Motor Yacht Cub to create Howth Yacht Club.
