The Continental: John Wick prequel series sets Albert Hughes as director

The Continental, an upcoming event series set in the world of
John Wick. Hughes, who co-directed
Menace II Society and
The Book of Eli, will helm two episodes of the three-part presentation. Originally,
The Continental was intended to be a spinoff series but was reworked as a three-night event series with feature-length runtimes and a budget to match. Each installment will run for 90 minutes and, according to insiders, have a budget of $20 million. That number can be adjusted, of course, seeing as plans are still coming together.

John Wick universe, the Continental chain of hotels are integral locations, as most of the time, they serve as neutral ground for assassins and other sorts of criminals. Just like in the first three
John Wick movies, The Continental will factor into the upcoming
John Wick: Chapter 4, but those who are curious about the origins of the hotels are in luck. Since 2017, a
Continental series has been in development, and today brings word that the Starz project has found its lead director.
Albert Hughes, who has directed movies like
Menace II Society,
Dead Presidents and
The Book of Eli with his brother, Allen Hughes, has come aboard to direct two episodes of
Albert Hughes, one half of the directing duo behind films like
The Book of Eli and
Menace II Society, is overseeing two episodes of
The Continental, which has been redeveloped from a full prequel show into a three-night event. Each installment will reportedly now run around 90 minutes and get budgets north of $20 million.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news about Hughes’ involvement, as well as the rejiggered format for the show. Hughes, who also directed films like
Dead Presidents and
From Hell alongside his brother Allen, went solo several years ago, and has directed the Kodi Smit-McPhee movie
Alpha and an episode of Showtime’s
The Continental takes place takes place 40 years before the events of the first Lionsgate film on the unsavory streets of 1970s New York City. The story will follow Winston, a young version of Ian McShane s character in the movies ,who runs the assassin-friendly hotel.
The spinoff has been in development since at least 2019, and was first supposed to be a regular television series. It has since turned into a three-part limited series, where each installment is movie-length and has movie-sized budgets of $20 million. It will ultimately air on Starz.
