The search is on for Cumbria s unsung farming heroes for prestigious awards

It had been planned to hold the much-anticipated event in the spring, but Covid-19 has led to the decision to move the event to a new date this autumn. Entries for the 12 categories will now be reopened until May 4. Alongside farming s core sectors - dairy, beef, sheep and machinery - there is also a celebration of talented youngsters coming into the industry. The search to find the county s farming unsung heroes is organised by Newsquest Cumbria in partnership with Carlisle-based business advisers and accountants Armstrong Watson.

That s the pledge from a group fighting to prevent the 125-year-old Newton Rigg agricultural college from closure in the summer with more than 100 jobs losses. This week the Further Education Commissioner deemed the Penrith college financially unviable and found no suitable bids were received to take it over. More than 500 students and apprentices attend but the FEC said most courses and training could be found elsewhere. Owner Askham Bryan College in York plans to sell the site when it closes in July.
