South Burlington to fix unfriendly chokepoint at Spear Street for bicyclists and pedestrians

A newly announced federal grant of $300,000 for safety upgrades should help everyone breath easier. City planners will fine-tune plans this spring for a 3/4-mile off-road shared path on the west side of Spear Street at University of Vermont s Forestry Building to Swift Street. An improved connection aims to inspire more foot-powered trips from neighborhoods around UVM to a network of paths and trails that branch out east, south and west from the Swift Street intersection including ones that lead to the Burlington bike path, or Greenway. Crosswalks at neighborhood street intersections are also in the works, according to a news release from the city.

Charlotte voters will decide future of land use

Voters will decide the future of East Charlotte Villageâs commercial district during Town Meeting Day. The townâs selectboard unanimously chose to put to vote the issue of whether the size of the district should grow to allow for development. At a Jan. 25 meeting, the selectboard also opted to let residents vote on whether the town land use regulations should be amended, clarifying current rules for on-farm business. Member Louise McCarren was the lone dissenting voice, with all four of her colleagues voting to put the issue on March ballots. âI had heard so much from people that it wasnât ready,â McCarren later said about her vote. âI normally would have said let the townspeople decide. I absolutely support development in East Charlotte.â
