Water Quality Board Calls Contamination Clean-Up Plan Unacceptable For Eden Site

LIVERMORE — According to a June 25 report published by the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board, the city’s proposed cleanup for contamination at the site set for Eden Housing in downtown Livermore is “neither appropriately justified nor acceptable.” Jean King, spokesperson for Save Livermore Downtown (SLD), submitted a press release stating that staff experts from the Water Quality Control Board “have raised new concerns about the city’s plan to remediate volatile organic compounds in the soil and mitigate vapor intrusion risks to future residents at the site of the proposed Eden Housing plan.” The site of the future Eden Housing project approved by the council May 25 once housed a train depot and dry-cleaning businesses. The city has been tasked with remediating the volatile organic compounds and other chemicals of concern present at the site due to its previous uses.

Four Tri-Valley projects earn federal funding

Swalwell s other funding requests approved by House Appropriations subcommittees were: $3.5 million for the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) project to update the Upper San Leandro Drinking Water Treatment Plant. $1.7 million for the Alameda County Transportation Commission s Safe Routes to Schools mini-grant program. The commission is partnering with local jurisdictions by giving grants to support their efforts to implement bicycle and pedestrian safety and access improvements around school sites across Alameda County. $1.5 million for Hayward s Stack Center. This youth and family center at Tennyson and Ruus roads will provide wraparound services to address inequities in the South Hayward community, including health, education, recreational and career training services.

Create A Plan That Will Work

Jean King, Save Livermore Downtown member As a last resort, Save Livermore Downtown has filed a lawsuit to halt the implementation of the Eden Housing plan. This action was necessary because the Livermore City Council did not engage with citizens to consider alternatives to the flawed Eden plan. We have communicated to the City Council and Eden Housing our desire to meet at the earliest possible moment to find acceptable alternatives to the current plan and avoid the necessity of the lawsuit. The fact is that Livermore residents oppose the flawed Eden housing plan by a 4 to 1 majority. The poll which demonstrates this opposition, conducted by respected David Binder Research, can be reviewed at www.savelivermoredowntown.com/voter-survey.
