On April Fools’ Day, we attempt to give a serious review to what could be considered a not-so-serious cigar or accessory. It’s a tradition that dates back to 2011 and the first collaborative project between Brooks Whittington and Charlie Minato, and in previous years it has included a 21-inch long cigar, one made with an energy drink infusion, a known fake Cuban Cohiba Diplomatic Siglo VI, and an NSFW lighter.
This year, it’s a cigar that gets its name from one of the main people in one of the most talked-about shows of 2020, Tiger King. That person is, of course, Carole Baskin, an animal sanctuary operator and animal rights activist, as well as the center of conspiracies regarding the death of her second husband, Don Lewis. Not to mention the source of numerous memes and other cultural references.

The AVO Classic Belicoso has an interesting mix of matte and shiny colors; the wrapper and base of the band both fall into the former category, while the gold parts of the band make up the latter. The wrapper leaf is a nutty shade of brown with some darker hues around the veins. The seams when visible reveal what color variance the leaf can have, though they are nearly invisible on one sample, and the thickness of the leaf seems to play a role in that as well. Since it’s going to get clipped off anyway I really couldn’t care less, but it isn’t the perfectly smooth finish that I’v

While the cellophane shows some signs of age, it’s not yellow, instead just a bit murkier. Once out of the cellophane, the cigar looks a bit weird. It’s not the prettiest shade grown wrapper you’ll see and there’s some noticeable discoloration towards the middle of the cigar. The aroma from the cigar is rather potent, at least for a few seconds, with barnyard, a cantaloupe-like sweetness and some rye bread. Interestingly, after about five seconds, it seems all of the aroma from the wrapper has disappeared. The foot smells both a bit sweet and a bit sour. There’s a generic sweetness and the cantaloupe flavor but they are contrasted by some pine and some sort of sour and acidic mixture I can’t really identify. Speaking of flavors that are hard to pinpoint, welcome to the cold draw. It’s not particularly pleasant and has a bit of a c
