The Low-Cost Carrier Problem: How To Fly To Hawaii

Low-cost carriers typically serve leisure passengers who want a low-fare getaway. These passengers generally want to visit destinations with beaches, a plethora of restaurants, and attractions that are different from the environment they get at home. Hawaii fits this bill for low-cost carriers, but the state has notoriously lacked low-fare competition. With Southwest in the market, there is hope for more low-fare competitors to start flying to Hawaii, but that is easier said than done.

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Oahu Island Burial Council gathered across Iolani Palace on Thursday, claiming that its longtime leader is being retaliated against by Gov. David Ige.
The group claimed Ige did not grant Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu another term because she spoke out publicly in January about alleged mismanagement at the State Historic Preservation Division.
The council said they believe Wong-Kaluâs advocacy about this issue resulted in her removal from the Oahu Island Burial Council chair position, which she served for three terms.
Paula Akana, Executive Director of ʻIolani Palace
The palace closed in March 2020 along with museums and event venues across the country, causing industry layoffs and millions lost in revenue. It reopened in June, but it only had enough money to operate for a few months.
Paula Akana, executive director of the Friends of Iolani Palace, started her position in summer 2019. There wasn’t any endowment here at the palace when I came in. So when the pandemic hit, we were really just devastated financially and mentally by everything that was going on, she said.
The palace recently had its first Paycheck Protection Program loan forgiven by the SBA and it applied for the second round, Akana said.
