The Daily Nexus endorses Shannon Sweeney, a third-year environmental studies and sociology major running with the Isla Vista Party, as the next External Vice President for Local Affairs.Â
If elected, Sweeney said she would prioritize studentsâ basic needs while working with the community to bring back Isla Vista open markets and showcase local talent.

Sweeneyâs three years of experience within the office â first as an Pearman Fellow in the office during her freshman year and then as the officeâs chief of staff during her sophomore and junior years â and her deep roots in the Isla Vista community make her the obvious choice for the position.Â
The Daily Nexus endorses fourth-year feminist studies major Geovany Lucero as the next Student Advocate General. The Nexus believes that Lucero â who is running unopposed â has illustrated the exceptional experience, qualifications and goals necessary to succeed in this position.Â
Throughout their academic career, Lucero has become increasingly involved with the university.

The Student Advocate General (S.A.G.) works in the Office of the Student Advocate, an executive, nonpartisan office that assists and represents students in disciplinary administrative and conduct matters. In the past year, Lucero has served as the internal deputy chief of staff in the office, and the Nexus believes they have the knowledge and skillset to begin work as the S.A.G. from day one of their term. Â

Well, Gauchos, Spring is here â and so is the looming disappointment that comes when all that ârebirthâ that people keep talking about just doesnât seem to be all that reborn. One such disappointment has become a popular consensus among current UC Santa Barbara freshmen, including both those in Isla Vista and those learning remotely from home: that none of this is anything like the 2007 blockbuster film âSurfâs Up.â
The film, starring Shia LeBeouf as the voice of lead penguin Cody Maverick, captured the hearts of Gen Z kooks all across California as a tender reminder of how much we love the beach and hate the inland empire. The film also served as a welcome sexual awakening for many tweens with a hard-on for the hot girl penguin voiced by Zooey Deschanel. One UCSB freshman, in his own defense, claims âshe was hot tho.âÂ

Services for Father Jon-Stephen Hedges, a fixture in Isla Vista and Santa Barbara County who dedicated himself to a life of service to others, will be held Thursday and Friday, according to his family.
Universally and affectionately known as “Father Jon,” Hedges, 73, had been seriously ill in recent weeks, and died last week at Sarah House, surrounded by his family.
Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at St. Athanasius Orthodox Church, 300 Sumida Gardens Lane, where Hedges served for many years as an assistant pastor.
