JERUSALEM: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken began a Middle East visit in Israel on Tuesday, seeking to bolster its ceasefire with Gaza`s ruling Hamas group and help speed humanitarian aid to the devastated Palestinian enclave.
Blinken was also due to visit Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, Cairo and Amman, with the United States harbouring every hope and expectation the ceasefire would continue to hold, a senior State Department official said. Our primary focus is on maintaining the ceasefire, getting the assistance to the people who need it, said the official, who spoke on Monday on the condition of anonymity. Egypt brokered the truce, in coordination with the United States.

Washington - US President Joe Biden condemned violence against Jewish communities in the United States and abroad on Monday after a string of attacks amid the conflict between Israel and Gaza s Hamas rulers.
Physical or verbal assaults were reported against Jews in New York City, Los Angeles and South Florida during the 11 days of fighting in the region. The recent attacks on the Jewish community are despicable,and they must stop. I condemn this hateful behaviour at home and abroad â itâs up to all of us to give hate no safe harbour, Biden wrote in a Twitter post.

Israeli businesses lost 1.2 billion shekels ($368 million) during 11 days of fighting between Israel and the Hamas militant group in Gaza, the country s main industrial group said on Monday, May 24.
The Manufacturers Association, which represents some 1,500 firms and 400,000 workers, said the loss was mostly due to employees choosing to stay at home due to the nearly nonstop Palestinian rocket fire from Gaza.
About a third of workers were absent from work in southern Israel and about 10% stayed home in areas closer to the commerical hub of central Israel, the association said.
