Leading biblical archaeologist Dr. Eilat Mazar, 64, died on Tuesday after a long illness.
Known for her discovery of “King David’s palace” in the City of David and biblically tied artifacts and constructions, Mazar was the scion of an Israeli archaeological dynasty. She led excavations in several sites, including most notably in two locations in the City of David ridge: above the Gihon spring and in the “Ophel” on the lower slope of the Temple Mount or Al-Aqsa compound.
Mazar was a field archaeologist, a scholar and a lecturer at the Hebrew University’s Institute of Archaeology in Jerusalem where she completed all her degrees. Her finds include some of the earliest known artifacts in the ancient city, dating as far back as the 12th and 11th centuries BCE, according to Mazar, who proposed they provide scientifically excavated evidence of the biblical united monarchy.

As soon as Jerusalem’s Israel Festival closes on June 19, the 7th Jerusalem Jazz Festival picks up the cultural slack from June 22-24, held on the grounds of the Israel Museum’s outdoor sculpture garden.
The festival, produced by the Israel Festival team and directed as usual by trumpeter Avishai Cohen, includes a program of all-Israeli artists for a series of intimate meetings between musicians and artists.
Around the 18th century BC (the Middle Bronze Age), the inhabitants of Tel Hazor expanded their settlement, and founded the lower city. The upper and lower cities were occupied until the 13
th century BC, when both were violently destroyed. Subsequently, Tel Hazor was rebuilt, though it was no longer the great city it once was. For instance, many of the constructions from this period were of a semi-nomadic character, whilst during the 11th century BC, the site was an unfortified Israelite settlement. Hazor regained some of its former splendor from the time of King Solomon onwards. During his reign, the upper city was rebuilt and fortified.
