Late last year, Netflix accidentally let the hedgehog out of the bag a bit early when one of their Twitter accounts revealed an animated
Sonic the Hedgehog series was on the way. The tweet was quickly deleted, but word still spread, as it usually does on the internet. We even wrote up a story about it. Now, Netflix has gone ahead and made it official: the
Sonic the Hedgehog animated series does exist, and it’s called
Sonic Prime.
And what is
Sonic Prime, you ask? Why, according to Netflix, it’s a 24-episode “animated adventure for kids, families, and long-time fans” that “draws upon the keystones of the brand and features the ‘Blue Blur’ of video game fame in a high-octane adventure where the fate of a strange new multiverse rests in his gloved hands. Sonic’s adventure is about more than a race to save the universe, it’s a journey of self-discovery and redemption.” And no, it doesn’t look
Ben 10 creators, Man of Action Entertainment. Set to premiere in 2022, the project (titled
Sonic Prime) was first tweeted about in December 2020, but the social post was quickly removed, leading fans to speculate that the news was released prematurely.

Netflix has officially given a series order to SEGA, WildBrain Studios, and Man of Action Entertainment’s upcoming 3D animated series adaptation titled
Sonic Prime, based on SEGA’s popular video game
Sonic the Hedgehog. The 25-episode series is scheduled to make its debut sometime in 2022.
“Sonic is a beloved character and holds a special place in everyone’s heart including my own,”Netflix’s director of original animation, Dominique Bazay said in a statement. “I spent many hours with the blue blur as a kid and it’s a privilege to be able to bring this character everyone knows and loves on a brand new adventure with Netflix one that a generation of loyal fans and brand new fans around the world can enjoy.”

A new animated series of Sonic the Hedgehog called Sonic Prime will be tearing onto Netflix with a worldwide premiere scheduled for 2022.
The 24-episode animated adventure is the product of a triple-threat deal between Netflix, SEGA of America, and WildBrain. Aimed at kids, families, and long-time fans of the franchise, Sonic Prime promises to draw upon the keystones of the brand as it follows Sonic on a new adventure in both a race to save the universe and find redemption.
The series will be animated at WildBrain’s Vancouver studio, and SEGA and WildBrain will jointly participate across production, distribution and licensing. Man of Action Entertainment, creators of Ben 10 and the characters and team in the Academy Award-winning feature Big Hero 6
